Covid-19 more famously known as coronavirus has transposed many past methodologies and the world can now easily be divided into a pre-covid and pot-covid epoch. The crucial impacts and the change of interests and the boost in social media usage and some specific applications, under the cloud of various research, will be the topic of discussion here. The Facts and figures for this research have been taken from the various sites and research which highlight the usage and interests of various users. We will discuss the usage of social media in different age groups as well as in different gender, how the covid has revolutionized social media and what are its after-effects of it.

Social media can be an efficient source of information and an effective means for staying abreast of the vast amount of knowledge, especially during the Covid-19 era. During the Covid-19 era the use of social media increased as compared to the pre-covid era because the interest of people in social media applications, and entertainment increased because they have to overcome Covid anxiety so they use different social media applications for entertainment purposes.

 

Usage of internet inpre-covid era:

  • Before the era of covid-19 (pre-covid era), there were different social media applications that were used by different people.
  • In the year of 2018, almost 3.196 billion people throughout the world were using social media as a source of entertainment.
  • People use several social media channels more in 2018 than they did in 2017, including YouTube (63%), Instagram (61%), Snapchat (58%), and Facebook (52%).
  • Almost half of social media users (46%) prefer to access social media on mobile apps instead of laptops and computers.
  • Females use mobile applications to access social media(52%) whereas males prefer computer web browsers(33%)over mobile phones. Almost 78% of 18- to 24-year-olds use Snapchat, and the majority of users visit Snapchat multiple times per day. Similarly, 71% of people in this age group use Instagram and almost (45%) are Twitter users.
  • Facebook remains the most widely used social media platform 68% of adults are now Facebook users. Other than the video-sharing platform YouTube, none of the other sites or apps measured in this survey are used by more than 40% of people.

Usage of the internet in the covid era:

Social media was a powerful tool even before covid but the use and impact of social media have highly elevated in the covid era with an increase of 9-13 percent. Millions of people have joined social media during the covid era and there is a mass increase in the use of entertainment sites to cope up with leisure time. The trends have changed vigorously and now the world has inclined towards fast and short entertainments to deal with the spare time. IMF says that the current interests of the people show that there is no returning back from this point and the interests of people have come to a point where it seems impossible to revive pre covid era. Moreover, covid has also changed the gender-based use of social media and now the interest of women in social media has inclined a lot, especially towards websites like Facebook and ticktock.

  • In 2018 the number of people who were using social media throughout the world was 3.196 billion which is 7% of the population.
  • Its usage will increase in 2019 to 3.48billion users which is 9% of the total population.
  • In 2020, there were 3.80 billion social media users.
  •  And finally, in 2021 these users will increase to 4.48 billion which is 13% of our total population.
  • This means that in the Covid era the interest of people in different social media applications increased and this percentage increased from 7% to 13%. This clearly means that in pandemic conditions the usage of social media increases so whenever another pandemic situation comes social media will again become the entertainment as well as knowledge source of people.

The conclusion of this research is that the world has been divided into pre covid and post covid eras. According to the above-mentioned information, in the pre-covid era, the number of social media users was about 3.16 billion and during the covid era, this number has increased and has been elevated to about 4.4 billion. This is the fastest increase in the number of users from the day social media evolved.

Covid changed the trend of usage of apps. Facebook and YouTube were the basic sources of entertainment during the pre-covid era but during the covid era, this interest has changed, and now tick-tock leads the market of interest with its users increased to about 516 percent in the covid era. Instagram, Twitter, and some other applications also showed increased usage.

Moreover, the incubation of people at home has led them to use social media for earning purposes, and also the trend of digitally gaining information has increased a lot.
